Dementia means business and it's a business we want to shut down, especially now that it is affecting teenagers. Pete and I are two ordinary people with commitment and passion to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, which is the most prevalent form of dementia. We do not want the kids of now, to have a future of suffering and dying with this cruel disease.
The work of Neuroscience Research Australia has inspired us, and we want to support them by raising money with our participation in the NeuRA Great Wall of China: Discovery Trek. We also want to get fitter and healthier so that we can have a better chance at growing old in good health.
This Discovery Trek challenge is bringing it all together – the opportunity to achieve our health goals, and most importantly, help fundraise for research to help people living with Alzheimer’s now, and the thousands who are diagnosed on a daily basis worldwide, including the youth who will be diagnosed in the future.
A cure is needed urgently. My mum was given this slow death sentence at the age of 68. She is now 79 with very poor quality of life. This disease has destroyed her capacity to function and to enjoy all the things she loved to do like cooking, sewing, crocheting, enjoying time with family and friends, driving, self-care, and so much more. Now in the late stage she can no longer walk or talk or do anything for herself.
Memories are just a small part of what dementia destroys. Humanity needs a cure, and we need it now.
